Leather tub chairs have been a popular choice of seating for many years and can be found in a wide range of commercial applications as well as in many homes. You would be forgiven for thinking that this style of chair is a modern design that was developed post industrial revolution. However, the tub chair is actually a classic design that has been around since the 18th century, being first developed in France but only for the very wealthy. There is no clear record of who first invented the tub chair although it is generally thought to have been developed during the period that King Louis XV reigned, and due to documents stating King Louis’s influence on the design of the tub chair he is often thought to be one of the key figures in popularizing this classic seat.
Towards the end of the 18th century the tub chair was introduced in the United States and was made popular by George Bright who manufactured a range of tub chairs in experimental styles in 1797. Since then, the tub chair has gained popularity throughout each decade and is a firm favourite in the 21st century and can be found in an endless amount of different styles.
