Yes you did read the title correctly, inflatable metal furniture. When thinking about café or dining chairs, we often think about seating with solid or tubular legs. Rarely does a design feature a frame that does not match these specifications.
Designed by Oskar Zieta, one thing that you can say about the Plopp and Chippensteel is that it is unique in that respect. Using thin sheets of Aluminium or Steel that are welded together around the edges, air is pumped through a valve and inflates it to form a solid metal structure.
Originally produced and showcased in 2009 at an exhibition for the Young Creative Polish Designers, the Plopp range caused quite a reaction.
Following this, the chairs and stools won countless awards including the Red Dot Design Award, the Forum AID Award and German Design Council Award to name but a few. This supported Oskars design and just a few years later have been manufactured for mass production.
The chairs themselves are certified for commercial use and can be used in cafes and bistros to give a unique look. With barstool and kitchen stool height options available, these ranges of furniture are not limited to commercial environments, but they can also be used in domestic settings as well.
There are accessories that are available with these chairs and stools including cushions as seat pads as well as feet coverings to protect the legs from damage. Available in around 7 different bright colour options, there is also a raw lacquered industrial finish which is a finish that is proving to be quite popular among contemporary cafes and bistros in the UK and across the world.
